Florence's big sister Émilie is better at everything. Faster on skis, taller, first to find the eggs, and every spring the winner of the family taffy pull at the sugar shack, where the syrup is poured on snow and rolled onto a stick and the best roll wins a wooden spoon carved by Pépère. Florence has never come close. This year she decides she will beat Émilie, and practises until her fingers are sticky and her rolls are still worse. Then Pépère shows her the old logbook where he has written every year's sap yield for fifty years, and she notices something: he never once wrote down the neighbour's.
